Everyone dreams of having a beautiful looking lawn, and laying your own lawn is actually a lot simpler than it may seem. It’s all about getting the preparation right and choosing the right time of year. This easy step by step guide will give you all the information you need to have an instant lawn, ready to use.

Picking the Right Time

As we said, it’s all about timing. The best time to lay lawn turf is when soil is warm and moist, which will allow the turf to establish itself more quickly onto the soil. We recommend autumn, as the new turf will receive plenty of rain come winter time. This is necessary to keep your grass healthy and avoid putting it under stress. You can also lay it down a bit earlier, during spring, especially if you will be expecting plenty of rain.

Choosing Your Turf

The type of turf you choose will depend on where you will be laying it and the environment you live in. For example, if you do not receive a lot of rainfall where you live, you may want to opt for drought-tolerant turf. If you are using it for a landscaping project, you may want to choose finer turf with grasses such as fescues.

You should measure out the area first to know how much you are going to need. Once you have the length and width, you can multiply these to get the area in square meters. You should always get a little extra in case there are any problems, such as damage to the turf.

Make sure you choose a reputable supplier to ensure you get good quality turf delivered right to your door. You should keep the turf in a shaded area and sprinkle it with water if you notice it starting to dry out. All American Turf Beauty provides fantastic quality lawn care services with a large range of different grass types covering a variety of soil types.

How to Lay Lawn Turf

Laying Your Turf

  1. Before you start laying down the turf you want to make sure you have done all the proper preparation. The area should be fully cleared of any weeds, debris and old pieces of turf. The turf will need to be laid down on a smooth, flat surface, so you should roughly level it off by redistributing the soil until the area is flat.
  2. You should then rake over the ground until you have created a nice smooth surface. The area will need to be firm, so use a roller or tread over it with your feet. You should go over this process again until everything is nice and firm and the area is even. You don’t want to compact the soil as this can cause further problems down the line. Give it a final rake over and you are ready for the next step.
  3. In order to help with the rooting process you should fertilize the soil. This will help to get your turf established more quickly. Do so by sprinkling pre-turf fertilizer over the area and lightly raking it in.
  4. We recommend laying the first row along a straight edge. You should do so slowly and carefully to prevent the turf from getting damaged. To avoid gaps you should butt the ends and edges together firmly, without stretching the turf. You should stagger the joints in brickwork fashion from one row to the next.
  5. The finished lawn should be leveled with a light roller, which will help to bed it into the soil. You can tidy any edges using a half-moon edging iron or long-bladed knife.

Once you have finished laying your lawn you should carry on with the aftercare to help is establish into the soil and remain healthy. Ensure it gets enough water throughout, checking all the corners. Press down any edges, which are not well seated, and mow the lawn once it has grown long enough.

Our goal at All American Turf Beauty, Inc. is a simple one:

To provide you with the highest quality products and methods available.

We offer every kind of service that it takes to develop and maintain a beautiful lawn in Iowa based on the climate, soil types, and the varieties of grass that are commonly grown here.

One of the keys to the success of the program is that we provide treatment to lawns approximately every 8 weeks throughout the growing season. This ensures that the grass has fertilizer (food) available throughout the growing season. Dandelions and other Broadleaf weeds are controlled as they germinate thus enabling a weed free lawn, and our Turf Specialist is at the property four to six times per season to address problems as and when they arise.

Another key to our service is our people. The most important person to you in our company is the Turf Specialist assigned to treat your lawn.

We are proud to say that our Turf Specialists are the best trained and most experienced in the lawn care industry.

When you become a customer at All American Turf Beauty, a Turf Specialist is assigned to your account. You will have the same person treating your lawn each time. It is their responsibility to service your lawn, make sure it is receiving the correct applications as scheduled, and to provide you with the best personalized service possible. Their jobs depend on it.

We have several programs to choose from. Your Turf Specialist will recommend the best program that fits the needs of your lawn and your budget.
